Watersports in Barbados

Scuba Diving

Whether new to diving or a seasoned pro, you will be amazed by underwater Barbados. The fringes and reefs found off this island blossom with healthy sponges, coral, plant life. There are a number of reefs, each one unique in its own special way.

The barrier reefs, located 1/2 - 2 miles from shore contain large coral heads which form the habitat for thousands of beautiful fish. Larger organisms are also found on these reefs, feeding on the smaller fish. The Hawksbill turtle can also be found on these reefs. Fringes and patching reefs are found closer to shore and have smaller coral formations and more abundant plant life then the barrier reefs. These reefs are home to Sea Horses, Frog Fish, Giant Sand Eels and many other marine creatures.

Wrecks form fascinating habitats for marine life and Barbados has several excellent sites for wreck diving. Carlisle Bay, with 200 reported wrecks, and the Stavronikita, located at Folkstone Marine Park are two of the most popular sites. Water Temp 80F 27C - Visibility 50 - 80 ft 15 - 24 m

Snorkeling

Snorkeling is fun and easy. It gives you the opportunity to explore some of underwater world at a slow and liesurely pace. Barbados' west and south coasts offer the the best areas for snorkeling. The water on this Caribbean side of the island is calmer and crystal clear. Venture out from the beaches and look at the fish swimming below, or set up a trip on a Dive/Snorkel boat to explore some of the beautiful, multi-colored reefs surrounding the islands.

Windsurfing

Barbados is one of the best wave windsurfing spots of the world. With warm temperatures and a prevailing northeast tradewind, conditions are good most of the year. The chances of wind are very good and the waves are perfect for jumping and waveriding, particularly on the south coast. Whether you are a beginner or experienced, the warm, clear waters are inviting.

Wave Runners

There is nothing quite like the speed and exhileration of wave runners. Barbados south and west coasts with calmer, clearer waters, offer the best conditions for wave runners. Ride the beaches and explore, check out some of the luxurious homes located along the coast, stop off at a perfect spot for lunch, or just to swim and play.
