Sosua
- North Coast

Sosua
Sosua is located on the North Coast of the Dominican
Republic in an area of beautiful beaches. It is
about 12 miles east of Puerto Plata and about
8 miles west of Cabarete. Sosua was founded in
1940 when the dictator Trujilo, seeking goodwill
from the international community after having
ordered the massacre of almost 20,000 Haitians
in the country, offered to take in Jewish refugees
from Germany who were being persecuted by the
Nazis. About 600 of them immigrated, of whom only
a small group eventually remained and became engaged
in the dairy and smoked-meat industries. Today,
Sosua is known as the cheese and salami capital
of Dominican Republic. Today it is known for its
multilingual and cosmopolitan character, and is
a real jewel of a town offering, in addition to
it's great beaches, many guest houses, hotels,
villas, casinos, terrace cafés, pubs, restaurants
and souvenir shops.
Actually Sosua is divided into two separate villages
which are separated by a bay at whose base is
a sandy white beach more than half a mile long.
To the east of the main beach is Los Charamicós,
where most of the Dominicans reside who are associated
with the tourist industry. It is older with crowded
sreets, and most restaurants serve local dishes.
Opposite the bay is El Batey which is booming
with new hotels and tourist attractions.
Sosua offers a variety of activities, particularly
watersports such as sailing, waterskiing, jet-skiing,
and scuba diving. It is a great place to begin
diving, and it is also a haven for serious divers.
The undersea world off the coast has excellent
reef diving, good visibility, warm water, wrecks,
caverns and marine life offering a wealth of diving
experiences. The beaches nearby offer great surfing
as well.
Whether you are looking for upscale or budget
accommodations, local or international cuisine,
great beaches or high powered activities, you
can find it in Sosua.
Getting to Sosua is easy. It is just 3 miles from
the main airport of the north, Puerto Plata International,
then a short taxi ride from there.
