La Ceiba

La Ceiba is located on the Caribbean coast of Honduras. It is the third largest city in the country and is serviced by an international airport. A ferry boat or a 20 minute flight from here takes you to the turquoise waters of the Bay Islands, Utila, Roatan and Guanaja. La Ceiba is a vibrant, lively town which beats to the rhythm of its Latin, Caribbean and Afro-Antillian culture. It is home to the Dole Fruit Company, producers of bananas, pineapples and grapefruits.

The "Zona Viva" is an area along the beach where most of the restaurants and night clubs are located. Central Park is a pleasant shaded area in the center of town and the beautiful Standard Park just minutes away. There are many hotels, restaurants, and a modern cinema. It is easy to find your way around the city and you can walk cycle or take a taxi for a minimum of cost.

You can visit the Butterfly and Insect Museum in La Ceiba, Honduras. Enter the incredible world of over 12,000 butterflies, moths and other insects from Honduras and around the world. Discover interesting facts about butterflies and insects. Learn how to collect and display these beautiful and bizarre creatures. Admire the pictures of butterflies and other insects in the tropical rain forest. Unique in the world! This is probably the only private, self-funded museum in the world that is open to the public with insects from so many countries. Insects from over 100 countries are on display!

In the outskirts of La Ceiba you can discover, the "Cuero Y Salado" Wildlife Refuge which has monkeys, parrots and manatees among their 35 protected species. White water rafting and kayaking are a thrilling attraction and the beaches surrounding La Ceiba are safe and clean. You can ascend into the majestic cloud forest of the "Pico Bonito" Natural Reserve, and hike from near sea-level up to 8,000 feet. You will discover the Fauna the Flora, several exotic waterfalls and incredible views of the Caribbean Coast and the Bay Islands. The Picturesque mountain peak, "Pico Bonito" is a landmark on the north coast of Honduras and without a doubt makes La Cieba an important Eco-Tourism destination.

La Ceiba is famous for its Carnival week, which takes place during the Month of May to celebrate the patron saint, San Isidro. Although the word carnival should not be interpreted in the same sense as the Carnivals in New Orleans and Rio de Janeiro, but more as a large party, this is without doubt the largest and most important celebration held regularly in Central America. During the week of Carnival, different sectors of town organize night long parties with live bands, plenty of food and drinks is available and there is a very festive atmosphere. Carnival normally runs from 2nd Sunday in May until the last weekend in May.

La Ceiba is perhaps the best communicated city in Honduras. The largest domestic carrier, Isleña Airlines has its operations hub here, and from here you can fly to Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, Choluteca, Roatan, Utila, Guanaja, Trujillo, as well as the Miskito Coast. Aerolineas Sosa and Rollins Air also have their main bases in La Ceiba. In addition, TACA and LACSA both have international flights to San Salvador, El Salvador, San Jose, Costa Rica, as well as Houston, Miami, New York and New Orleans, in the USA.

For visitors coming from Europe, you may book through KLM, Lufthansa, Alitalia, Air France, British Airways, and Iberia.

La Ceiba is also a departure point for ferry service to the Bay Islands.
