Caribbean
Airlines
Caribbean Airlines and more commonly
known as Bwee, are the national
airline. They offer direct flights to
Trinidad from London Heathrow. The flights
from London Heathrow terminal 3 operate
daily, stopping at Barbados, St. Lucia
or Antigua on each leg, depending upon
the day of the week. Caribbean Airlines
previously operated a service from Manchester,
via Barbados. However, this service
terminated at the end of April 2006.
Caribbean Airlines flights from the
UK do not currently fly directly into
Tobago, although the Bwee schedules
rather give that impression. You can
purchase 'Thoroughfare' tickets from
the UK to Tobago, but the service does
involve a change of aircraft in Trinidad,
where you must collect your checked
luggage, clear customs and immigration
and check-in for the air bridge transfer
to Tobago - so allow an additional two
hour for the connection time. Luggage
will not be automatically routed through
to the second aircraft.
The Caribbean Airlines service utilizes
an Airbus 343 aircraft carrying up to
284 passengers in a two class configuration
of economy and business/first class.

Golden
Caribbean (Excel)
Golden Caribbean , a Sussex-based tour
operator, offer a popular and highly-affordable
charter service to Tobago , using aircraft
operated by Excel Airways (previously
Monarch Airlines).
Golden Caribbean /Excel offer two regular
weekly services to Tobago: a direct
non-stop flight on Thursdays and direct
flight via Saint Kitts (SKB) on Saturdays.
During the peak winter months, they
also offer a Sunday flight via Grenada.
The Excel flights operate from London
Gatwick South terminal. The service
uses a Boeing 767 aircraft carrying
281 passengers, normally in a three-class
configuration of standard economy, premium
economy and Excel One (business) class.
However, for the 05/06 winter season,
the aircraft will be reconfigured and
will offer 42 Excel One seats. All other
seating will be standard economy - with
no Premium Economy. The three class
configuration will return for the Summer
'06 months.
The Excel service has been criticized
for offering limited legroom in standard
economy. However, a new aircraft was
introduced in May 2005 and now offers
32-inch legroom in Economy. This is
one inch more than offered by BA or
Virgin.
You cannot pre-book seats on the Excel
flights, but Excel Pre-flight can arrange
for people to be seated together, for
£15 per person roundtrip. For
£60 you can also pre-book the
emergency exit row with extra legroom
(as long as the passengers are over
18 and able-bodied). Flight-only tickets
for the Excel service can be obtained
from Golden Caribbean or through most
travel agents. From mid-2006, you can
now book online from the Excel Airways
site at www.xl.com.
The local Tobago agent for Excel is
Tourist Services in Tobago.

Virgin
Atlantic
Virgin Atlantic operate a non-stop service
to Tobago on Thursdays (was Monday until
July 2005). There are plans to offer
a second weekly flight, but this is
dependent upon the completion of upgrades
to Tobago’s Crown Point airport.
The Virgin flights operate from London
Gatwick South. The flight continues
to Grenada, where it drops off and collects
passengers and returns to Tobago for
refueling and re-stocking before the
overnight return to London. The Virgin
service utilizes a Boeing 747-400 carrying
439 passengers in a three-class configuration;
standard economy, premium economy and
Upper Class (with super-doper Upper
Class suites).
Most tickets for this service are provided
as part of package holidays with Virgin

Condor is part of the Thomas
Cook Group. In recent years the
airline changed their name to Thomas
Cook powered by Condor. Fortunately
sanity prevailed, the marketing men
hopefully got fired, and they have now
reverted to old Condor.
The airline provides a year-round twice-weekly
(Wednesday & Sunday) non-stop direct
service to Tobago from Frankfurt, with
return via Porlamar (Isla Margarita,
Venezuela).
The Condor service utilizes a Boeing

Span is a charter service operating a
single direct non-stop flight from New
York to Trinidad every Saturday.

expected to start in January or February
2006. No other details are available at
this time.
Update: As at the beginning of April 2006,
the US Air website carried no information
about this service. Emails to the airline
asking about the service have remained
unanswered. It looks increasingly as if
plans for this service have been abandoned. |

AIR
TRAVEL: TRINIDAD-TOBAGO AIRBRIDGE
A guide to airline services between Trinidad
and Tobago
Tobago Express is a subsidiary of Caribbean
Airlines and was formed to run an airbridge
service between Trinidad (Piarco, Port
of Spain ), and Tobago 's Crown Point
airport. However, Caribbean Airlines also
now operates its own air bridge services,
to ease the high congestion on the Tobago
Express service. The fact that this is
called Bwee Express does not help. Even
the staff at Crown Point airport is confused
and simply announces all air bridge flights
as Tobago Express.
The current Tobago Express flight schedule
indicates twelve flights per day in each
direction, operating between 6:00am and
9:15pm from Piarco and from 6:40am to
9:55pm from Crown Point. Bwee list a completely
different schedule, showing up to eighteen
air bridge flights per day each way. On
the other hand, the Crown Point airport
website shows less than a handful of these
flights as being scheduled for arrival
or departure. You could easily get the
impression that there are up to 30 air
bridge flights. In truth there is a daily
total of about a dozen flights, each way.
